Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Psychologist vs Clinical Psychologist
All psychologists in Australia are registered with AHPRA and have a minimum of six years of university training and supervised practice. A clinical psychologist has completed further postgraduate study β typically a Masters or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology β and holds an area of practice endorsement from the Psychology Board of Australia. This additional training covers the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions ranging from mild to severe and complex. Clinical psychologists also attract a higher Medicare rebate.
Do I Need a Referral?
No referral is required to book. However, to claim a Medicare rebate you'll need a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan. NDIS participants can attend with a valid plan, and referrals from Support Coordinators are also welcome.
Medicare-Rebated Sessions
Under the Medicare Better Access scheme, a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan provides up to 10 individual Medicare-rebated psychology sessions per calendar year. For eligible eating disorder diagnoses, a GP Eating Disorder Management Plan provides up to 40 Medicare-rebated sessions per calendar year. Your GP will review your plan periodically and re-refer as clinically appropriate.
What Happens in the First Session?
The first session covers your background, current concerns, and what you want to work on. From there, we discuss how therapy will be structured and develop a treatment plan.
Session Length
Standard therapy sessions are 46β60 minutes. Assessment sessions may run longer depending on the type of assessment and will be discussed with you in advance.
Confidentiality
Psychologists are bound by strict confidentiality and ethical standards set by the Psychology Board of Australia and the APS. Information is kept confidential unless there is a serious risk of harm or where disclosure is required by law.
Telehealth Appointments
We offer secure video telehealth sessions for clients across the Mornington Peninsula and Victoria. Telehealth sessions attract the same fees and Medicare rebates as in-person appointments.
Psychological Assessments
A psychological assessment uses standardised tests, clinical interviews, and observations to evaluate a specific area of concern. A written report with recommendations is provided. We assess for ASD, PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance), ADHD, learning difficulties, cognitive functioning, and social-emotional concerns.
What Ages Do You Work With?
Children from age 3, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Both therapy and assessments are available across all age groups.
Clinical Supervision
Regular supervision sessions with an experienced clinician to review cases, discuss clinical and ethical issues, and support ongoing development. Available for psychologists at all career stages.
Cancellations & Rescheduling
Unconfirmed appointments are cancelled at 10am two weekdays prior. Confirmed but unattended appointments incur a fee at the full session cost. Please contact us as early as possible to reschedule.
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)
We are primarily an Animal Assisted Therapy clinic, and our trained therapy dog is present during sessions unless alternative arrangements are made well in advance. The presence of a therapy dog may help reduce anxiety, increase engagement, and support communication β particularly for clients who find it difficult to open up in traditional therapy settings. Our therapy dog and handler team are trained and accredited through Therapy Dogs Australia. Sessions with a therapy dog attract the same fees as standard sessions. If you have allergies or are uncomfortable around dogs, please let us know when booking so we can arrange a session without the dog present.
